Visual ads in ChatGPT: what should businesses prepare?

In brief: Advertising in ChatGPT is developing beyond text units into visual formats designed to show products and their use cases. OpenAI is also expanding conversion-data integrations, attribution partnerships, incrementality testing and brand-suitability evaluation. For Azerbaijani businesses, the immediate task is not to buy ads today. It is to prepare visual assets, first-party data, measurement and brand-safety rules for an AI-native advertising environment.

OpenAI announced the new visual format and measurement updates on 5 October 2026. Initial testing is scheduled to begin later this month in the United States, within image generation for ChatGPT Free and Go users, with an initial group of advertisers. Availability and pricing for Azerbaijan have not been announced. This article therefore does not imply local availability; it explains how businesses can prepare for the direction of travel.

What changes with a visual ad format?

The format is designed to show product inspiration, usage and the experiences a product can enable. A person generating an image may see a contextually relevant ad. OpenAI says ads will be clearly labelled, separate from the image being created and unable to influence ChatGPT's answers.

This differs from the classic banner model. The ad appears while a person is exploring an idea and shaping a decision, rather than on a separate media page. The key planning question becomes not only how many people saw the ad, but also at which need and decision stage it appeared.

A single packshot may not be enough. Brands need structured visual libraries that explain function, use context, differentiation and outcome. A digital marketing team should organise these assets by objective, audience intent and conversion stage.

Conversion and attribution measurement is expanding

OpenAI says integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp make it easier to send conversion data from existing systems. Attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin support Conversions API, reporting and click-attribution solutions.

Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL are named as full-funnel and advanced-measurement partners. Geo-based incrementality experiments are being explored with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic. The distinction matters: attribution tries to assign an existing outcome to a touchpoint, while incrementality asks whether the advertising caused an outcome that would not otherwise have occurred.

The results cited by OpenAI are early partner findings, not universal guarantees. DV Rockerbox reported WeightWatchers' attributed CPA at 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark; WorkMagic reported statistically significant lift for Dose; Triple Whale said 93% of Portland Leather visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new. These figures should not be treated as expected results for every market or advertiser.

Brand safety in a conversational environment

On a webpage or video, adjacent content is relatively visible. In an AI experience, context is the conversation itself. OpenAI says its placement guardrails are designed to keep ads away from emotionally vulnerable, sensitive and otherwise unsuitable conversations.

Negative Phrases are available to qualifying advertisers. OpenAI is also developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The ability of independent partners to evaluate safeguards without accessing private user conversations will be important to advertiser confidence.

Five practical actions for Azerbaijani businesses

  1. Upgrade the visual library: show products in use, with outcomes, scale and meaningful differentiation—not only on white backgrounds.

  2. Map conversion data: identify where forms, calls, messages, orders, payments and repeat purchases are stored.

  3. Standardise UTM and CRM governance: use consistent names for channel, campaign, creative and sales stage.

  4. Write an incrementality test plan: complement platform attribution with geographic, audience or time-based controls where practical.

  5. Prepare a brand-safety list: document sensitive topics, prohibited claims and risky language before activation.

Who should monitor this channel?

E-commerce, tourism, property, automotive, beauty, furniture and education brands with visual offerings may have the clearest early use cases. For service businesses, the conversion may be a qualified enquiry, booked consultation or sales call rather than an online purchase, making CRM connection essential.

The biggest risk for small and medium-sized businesses is entering a new channel without a measurement foundation. A campaign may report clicks and leads, yet still hide business impact when sales status, revenue and margin are not connected. Media buying decisions should follow measurable business objectives, not novelty.

Why organic AI visibility still matters

The ad format does not replace organic visibility. Ads remain separate from answers, and when people investigate a brand, service pages, case studies, reviews and consistent business information still shape the decision. Preparation therefore requires clear product data, expert content and credible brand signals alongside paid media.

Marketing Partner's perspective

The strategic signal is that advertising is moving from a search-results page into the conversation and ideation stage. If creative, media, analytics and sales teams operate separately, measuring this channel accurately will be difficult.

Marketing Partner recommends a three-stage plan: audit visual and data assets, establish conversion and CRM measurement, and run a limited-budget incrementality test if and when the channel becomes available in Azerbaijan. This keeps the business ready without committing budget to an unproven assumption.
